How it's made

Silkwood makes all cabinets to individual order in its factory near Buntingford. We work to the very highest standards and produce everything here in our own factory. The mill is equipped with the most advanced computer controlled machinery plus machines which require the skills of earlier times for parts that can only be produced in the traditional way.

Skilled cabinet makers work on individual pieces of furniture which are marked with the client’s name. All Silkwood doors are framed using a wide variety of seasoned woods. Joints are tenoned and the thickness of the finished frame is a substantial 25mm.

The doors are individually sized into timber frames and normally fixed with solid steel or brass butt hinges. The drawers are expertly made with precise dovetail joints. Carcasses are strongly built and made to last a lifetime.

We use the hardest wearing clear lacquers and stain and colour the woods when required. For painted finishes the client may choose any colour from any paint manufacturer. Various finishes are available including distressed and hand painted. A mixture of painted with some lacquered areas is sometimes chosen.
